Taking Breakfast Cereals-ly

We totally get it! Cereal isn’t the go-to breakfast meal for most Filipinos. Usually, we go for a bread and spread combo, a tuyo and champorado pairing, or even a full-on kanin plus ulam meal to start our day—chances are, these are leftovers from last night’s dinner. But, hear us out: a bowl of cereal might just be the easy, nutritious, and satisfying start your mornings need.

Time is Gold

Let’s start with the best reason of all: time management. A lot of us don’t have enough time to spare for prepping and cooking a full breakfast meal with rush hour traffic just around the corner. Pouring milk into a bowl of cereal only takes a few seconds, eating it could take less than five minutes, and the cleanup is much faster compared to washing a couple of plates and utensils. It’s definitely a time-saver!

In addition to the first reason, you get a lot of dietary nutrients in one go! Cereals are a good source of carbohydrates for the day’s physical and mental needs. Fiber is another essential nutrient found in every crunch to help your body’s digestion and metabolism. Partnering cereals with milk is a very good way to get more calcium in your system, something your bones will appreciate a lot. These are just some of the nutrients you get in a quick and tasty serving of breakfast cereal.

Tasting the Breakfast Benefits

The great thing about having cereals for breakfast is gaining benefits that go beyond the dining table. Missing out on the day’s first meal is saying ‘no’ to a couple of good things such as:

  • A stable mood and increased productivity

This is all thanks to the glucose and serotonin we get when we have breakfast—two crucial elements in ensuring a well-functioning brain and body.

  • Weight management

Here’s something that sounds like weird advice: if you’re trying to shed a few pounds, don’t skip breakfast. It might seem counterintuitive, but this is to avoid the “rebound effect” wherein you overeat when you break a fast. To avoid messing with your digestion and metabolism, be sure to have breakfast every morning.

  • Less chances of headaches

Let’s be frank, real life can be full of headaches, so it’s best to always be ready. Having breakfast helps regulate your blood sugar levels which keeps it from fluctuating and causing discomforts, weakness, and light-headedness.

A common impression Filipinos have with idea of having cereal for breakfast is that it might not be “Filipino enough”. Compared with all our silogs and pandesal, it may not be too far from the truth. But if you look at it through a practical and nutritional lens, cereal can truly be a game-changer when it comes to your morning routine. It’s quick, convenient, and is full of essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Plus, it offers the best bang-for-your-buck, especially for busy mornings. So, if you’re looking for an easy and nutritious breakfast to start your day, give cereal a try! You may discover that it’s the most sulit breakfast option out there.
